The Quilters Cake

This sheet cake was created for the 90th birthday of an extraordinary woman at the request of her loving family.  The cake was designed as a replica of a beautiful quilt made by the guest of honor.   All of the details were drawn onto the fondant by hand with edible food paints to create a realistic patchwork where the individual brush strokes actually mimic the effects of each piece of thread.

And here is the guest of honor herself posing with the cake.  You can see the original quilt in her background with the quilt cake in miniature.  It certainly was a difficult cake to cut into with all of the details, but you can bet it tasted delicious!

Our thanks to the wonderful Alma Heer-Hood for the courtesy of placing her picture on here as well as displaying her amazing craftsmanship with the quilt.  And a thank you to Sharmen Wright for the photographs.
